Windies tour of India, 2018

India vs Windies, 2nd Test | IND vs WI WHO WILL WIN

The Big Picture

After succumbing to a record defeat in the first Test, a beleaguered Windies unit will take on India at Hyderabad on Friday.

The first match proved to be a mismatch of sorts. Barring the first over where Shannon Gabriel pinned KL Rahul LBW, it was all India. The debutant Prithwi Shaw helped himself to a flawless hundred, skipper Virat Kohli carried on what he does for a routine with the bat in hand- score hundred.

The Indian captain helped himself to a flawless yet patient 24th ton while Ravindra Jadeja veiled his bat round to bring up his maiden Test ton in front of his home crowd to help India post-dec 9-649 in the first innings.

If Windies were hapless with the bowl in the absence of their two frontline bowlers- Jason Holder and Kemar Roach, their approach to batting was at best bizarre and lacked the basic tenet of Test match batting- patience, as they were bowled out twice inside four sessions to hand the hosts a record win by an innings and 272 runs.

What can we expect at Hyderabad?

Windies:-

For starters, a fight from the Windies. They have able players in Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, and Shimron Hetmeyar, who have scripted a similar turnaround last year at Headingley when they chased down a target in excess of 300 in the fourth innings, and as Kraigg Brathwaite said, their batsmen need to trust their defense before allowing their attacking instincts to take over.

India:-

A case for all three openers?

This will be the last Test match that India will play before the all-important tour of Australia, and they’ll like to give as many players a chance as possible before embarking Down Under.

So, can India field all the three openers (Shaw, Rahul and Mayank) at Hyderabad? In that case who sits out? Ajinkya Rahane, himself is going through a lull phase and needs game-time. Cheteshwar Pujara? The India No.3 looked imperious at Rajkot and was the most successful Indian batsman in England after Virat Kohli.

What about the Indian captain? Kohli sleepwalked into his 24th Test hundred last week and unless he wants to stroll past his 25th, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to rest Kohli and field al the three openers. The team management has a tough selection conundrum ahead of them and we’ll get a jist of it when they announce their Team XII a day before the Test.
