Put into bat first, the visitors got the desired start with both the openers – Amy Ellen Jones (79) and Tammy Beaumont (35) – pairing up for a 114-run opening partnership. The steady start was then taken forward by skipper Heather Knight (61 of 66), Natalie Sciver (93 of 73) and Danielle Wyatt (47 of 26) to mammoth looking 331-7 in the allotted overs.

Coming to chase, the hosts faced a big blow when Anushka Sanjeevani returned on a duck in the first over. Sri Lanka then failed to build a partnership and was soon reduced to 46-7 when Nilakshi De Silva (45) and Oshadi Ranasinghe (51*) showed some characters and helped the side cross 150 runs marks. While it was the maiden ODI fifty for Oshadi Ranasinghe, the 88 runs partnership between the two for the eighth wicket certainly saved Sri Lanka from a big humiliation. Eventually, Sri Lanka finished 159-8 in 40 overs when the rain came into play and the hosts fell short by 154 runs.

It is a must-win game for the hosts to stay alive in the contest. The third and final ODI will be played on March 21 Thursday at Air Force Ground, Katunayake. The ODI series will be followed by 3 T20Is scheduled on March 24, 26 and 28 in Colombo.
