The Kiwis were the finalists in the last edition (CWC 2015) and will be eyeing the World Cup glory this time. Led by Kane Williamson, New Zealand is one of the favourites for the World Cup Trophy and also against Sri Lanka in the opener.

Playing under the leadership of Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka are low on confidence as the 1996 World Cup winning side has lost eight out of last nine ODIs. They have slipped to ninth place in the ICC ODI rankings.

In the warm-up games, New Zealand thumped India in style by 6 wickets before facing 91-runs drubbing at the hands of Windies. Sri Lanka, on the opposite, faced 87 runs defeat at the hands of South Africa in the first warm-up game before facing 5 wickets defeat against Australia in the second game.

The pitch in Cardiff is a bit slow in nature in comparison to other venues and also offers some bounce. Ish Sodhi and M Santner can trouble the Sri Lankan Tigers with their flighted deliveries and turns.
