The third or the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia starts on December 26th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Men in Blue won the first match, which was only their fifth Test win on Australian soil but the hosts bounced back strongly in the second Test and levelled the series. Now the series rests at 1-1 and both the sides will be looking to take a lead and fancy their chances of the series win.

The 146 runs win in the second test at Perth was Australia’s first test win after the ball-tampering row in Newlands. Prior to the start of the series, the hosts were considered to be a bit feeble against the tourists who were said to be the first favourites. However, the way they made their comeback in the Perth showcased it’s not easy to defeat Kangaroos at their home.

India still staggering with selection issues    

Going with all-pace attack and not considering Ravindra Jadeja for the Perth test, the poor run of Murali Vijay and KL Rahul at the top and the injury concerns of Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Prithvi Shaw continue to haunt the management and skipper Virat Kohli. The skipper once again failed to read the pitch at Perth and featured with all pace attack where Nathan Lyon once again proved out to be the trump card for the hosts finishing with a total of eight wickets in both innings.     

While Prithi Shaw has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour, visitors are still sweating over the opening combination along with injury concerns of both the regular spinner – R Ashwin and R Jadeja. Another concern for team India is all-rounder Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder has been named in the squad for the Boxing Day Test but it is still not clear whether he will get a chance or not.

So, with plenty of decisions to be made, let’s wait and watch for the final XI.

Hosts include six-year-old in the squad  

Aussie skipper Tim Paine revealed that six-year-old Archie Schiller will be his co-skipper for the Boxing Day Test against India. The six-year-old Archie Schiller can eve make his international debut at the MCG. Archie Schiller inclusion to the squad comes as a part of an initiative between Cricket Australia and the Make A Wish foundation. Schiller suffers from congenital heart disease and Australia coach Justin Langer invited him for training with the squad ahead of the first Test in Adelaide.

Meanwhile, the hosts have named the same squad for the remaining two games. Chris Tremain will not return in the squad while Peter Siddle and Mitchell Marsh have joined the squad after taking part in BBL 2018-19.   

Pitch Review 

While the Perth pitch failed to live up to what was promised, both the sides are now excited for the MCG wicket. There is some grass on the MCG pitch and the curator Matt Page has said that the wicket will assist the bowlers both spinners, pacers and the batters. 

Meanwhile, Aussie opener Marcus Harris has warned both the sides not to be fooled by the grass on the pitch.
