10th June 1986 witnessed history being created as Team India registered first-ever Test win at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Kapil Dev-led side toured England for the three-Test series and started on the high note by winning the first Test by 5 wickets.
Asked to bat first, England were bundled out for 294 runs as Chetan Sharma scalped five wickets. For hosts, opener Graham Gooch top-scored with a knock of 114 runs. In reply Team India displayed a brilliant batting performance and managed to take a 47-run lead in the first innings after registering a score of 341, owing to Dilip Vengsarkar’s knock of 126 runs.
In the second essay, England was bowled out for just 180 runs, setting India a target of 134 runs to win. Kapil Dev and Maninder Singh starred with the ball, picking up four and three wickets respectively.
Chasing the target on the final day of the match, the visitors tumbled in the start but an unbeaten knock by Ravi Shastri and Kapil Dev of 20 and 23 respectively made sure that India ends the first Test of the series on a winning note.
