Despite ending as India’s highest run-scorer in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) with 1159 runs from 18 Tests at 42.92 with 3 centuries and 6 half-centuries, Ajinkya Rahane’s inconsistency has been one of the major problems for Virat Kohli-led side.

India’s Test vice-captain, since scoring a match-winning hundred against Australia in Melbourne earlier this year, has been going through a lean phase and is averaging just over 21 in 7 Tests to go with only one-half century. He, however, did play a part in the first innings of the WTC but failed to score runs in the second innings and invited criticism to his name.

Rahane will be under scrutiny in the five-Test series against England. His uncharacteristic lean patch would be a cause of concern as he holds the key for India in the middle order. The Indian vice-captain would look to reply to all his critics by performing well and with someone like Hanuma Vihari in the squad, who is a useful batsman in the middle order, makes the upcoming series extremely important for Ajinkya Rahane.
