Mayank Agarwal
Ever since the emergence of Shubman Gill in the squad, Mayank Agarwal has found it difficult to find a place in the playing XI. The Karnataka opener had a great start to his international Test career during India’s tour to Australia in 2018/19. He set the stage on fire in the home Test series against South Africa and Bangladesh and it almost seemed like Team India got a stable opener in the longest format of the game.
Agarwal’s career, however, has seen a drastic change in the last few months as, during Indian triumph in Australia earlier this year, the right-handed batsman did not feature in all four matches as he was dropped after the second match due to poor outings. He then warmed the bench during the home Test series against England and didn’t feature in the playing XI of the WTC final against New Zealand.
Now with Shubman Gill not being available for the five-Test series England, Mayank Agarwal is almost certain to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. The swashbuckling batsman from Karnataka has a great opportunity to earn his place at the top of the order if he delivers in the upcoming Test matches. In his 14-match Test career, the Punjab Kings batsman averages a healthy 45.74.
