The Dhaka Premier League (DPL) has a rich history dating back to its inaugural season in 1974-75, making it the longest-standing club cricket competition in Bangladesh. However, it wasn’t until the 2013-14 edition that the tournament achieved List A status, surpassing the National Cricket League One-Day as the country’s primary List A competition.
Prior to the 2013-14 season, which introduced the List A format, Abahani Limited was the dominant force in the DPL. They emerged victorious on 17 occasions, establishing themselves as the most successful team in the tournament’s history. Mohammedan Sporting Club and Biman Bangladesh Airlines were also noteworthy winners, securing the championship nine and five times, respectively. However, the tournament did not take place in 2012-13, leading to the introduction of the List A format in the following season.

The DPL tournament follows a round-robin format, where all 12 participating teams compete against each other. The top six teams then advance to the playoff rounds to compete for the championship, while the bottom three teams face off to determine relegation. Each season, the teams can change based on promotion and relegation, with the two lowest-finishing teams being demoted to the second division, and the top two teams from the second division being promoted.

The allocation of players to clubs varies each season and involves elements of a lottery system. Additionally, player transfers between clubs have been observed between seasons. Until the 2019-20 season, many teams included players from countries other than Bangladesh in their squads. In the 2013-14 season, a total of 82 foreign players participated in the Dhaka Premier League.
However, starting from the 2015-16 season, only one foreign player has been allowed in the playing eleven, although clubs are permitted to have multiple overseas players on their roster. In the 2015-16 season, 36 foreign players featured in the league, including 22 from India and 10 from Sri Lanka. However, in the 2019-20 competition, foreign players were excluded from participating. Now, let’s take a look at the winners of the DPL after it gained List A status.
