The Mumbai Indians Women etched their name into the history books as they were crowned the winners of the first-ever edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023). In a nail-biting grand finale encounter, the Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals Women by 7 wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. After having finished at the top of the points table during the league stage of the T20 competition, the Delhi Capitals Women gave a brilliant fight in the finals but eventually ended up on the losing side.

The runners-up, Delhi Capitals Women received a cash prize worth INR 3 crore while the UP Warriorz Women who ended up at the third position also won a prize money of INR 1 crore. It was indeed a historic moment for the Mumbai Indians Women’s all-rounder Hayley Matthews who won both the Man of the Series and Purple Cap for taking the most number of wickets which is 16 from 10 games and also scored a total of 271 runs. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals Women captain Meg Lanning won the Orange Cap as she finished as the leading run-getter in the tournament with 345 runs from 9 games at an average of nearly 50 and a strike-rate of 139.11.
WPL 2023 Final: Mumbai Indians Women beat Delhi Capitals Women by 7 wickets
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Delhi Capitals Women did not had the best of starts having lost three big wickets inside the first six overs of the powerplay. The Delhi team never really found any momentum throughout their innings as the Mumbai Indians bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals to eventually restrict the opposition at 131 for 9 in 20 overs. The MI-W duo of Hayley Matthews and Issy Wong picked up three wickets each.
During the chase, the Mumbai Indians Women ended up losing both their openers quite early with just 23 runs on the scoreboard. However, the pair of Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver then played sensibly and stitched an impressive partnership of 72 runs. Sciver remained unbeaten till the end after scoring a wonderful match-winning half-century as the Mumbai Indians Women chased down the target with three balls to spare.
