Moeen Ali is one of the elite spin hitters in world cricket at the moment which is an unique quality required for the shortest format of the game. He came into the IPL at the back of a match-winning innings against Australia in a T20I game.
It was expected that he will be used as a spin power hitter in the middle overs but RCB have terribly underutilized him and just gave him 2 matches in the whole of this season. He was given the opportunity to play in the knockout game in eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad but he failed the seize the opportunity as he ran out himself in the game.
Moeen Ali’s brainfade moment
David Warner won the toss and elected to bowl first in the all important game. RCB made a tactical change as Virat Kohli himself opened the innings along with the young sensation in Devdutt Padikkal but Jason Holder’s initial burst ensured that RCB’s openers are back in the pavilion without any substantial score.
RCB were struggling to get going and Aaron Finch was dismissed by Shahbaz Nadeem for 32 and Moeen Ali joined AB de Villiers to take RCB to safe waters. But what followed was an absolute brainfade moment. The first ball that Moeen Ali got to face was a free-hit which he failed to capitalize and hit straight to Rashid Khan at covers and tried to steal a single but Rashid Khan hit the bull’s eye to send Moeen Ali back for a golden duck.
Poor strategies from RCB cost them the game
RCB were stubborn with their tactics and served AB de Villiers for one more time against a wrist spinner and a SLA in the middle overs in spite of having Moeen Ali in the dug out who could have taken both of them as it was a favorable matchup for him.
They fell into the trap of the miserable theory of best batsman should face more balls which has been nothing but a failure. They should have understood it and should be back with a much better mindset next time around.
