Team India have started off their 2023 – 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a massive innings and 141-run victory over West Indies in the first Test match taking place at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. The Rohit Sharma-led side have now taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. It was quite evident that hosts West Indies definitely need to step up both in the batting as well as bowling departments to put up a fight against this Indian team.

There were many exceptional performances especially from the Indian players in the three days of this 1st Test. It was really difficult to go past senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s 12 wickets in the Test, but Yashasvi Jaiswal was surely terrific on his Test debut on a wicket which was extremely slow. The 21-year-old opener showed great amount of resilience to score a beautiful century and thus, Jaiswal was given the Man of the Match award in the WI vs IND 1st Test match.
After having won the toss and opting to bat first in the IND vs WI match, West Indies got off to a poor start having lost as many as four wickets in the opening session on Day 1. West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul got a bit of starts each but they failed to convert them while the rest of the batting line-up never really showed any resistance to put up a fight. Eventually, West Indies got bowled out for a paltry total of 150 runs in 64.3 overs. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin picked up a brilliant five-wicket haul and Ravindra Jadeja finished with three wickets.
In reply, India’s newly formed opening pair of skipper Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal batted amazingly well on a slow Dominica pitch. The openers stitched a remarkable partnership of 229 runs where Rohit scored a wonderful century. Shubman Gill failed to contribute much during his first Test innings at the No.3 spot, however, Jaiswal showed sensational temperament on debut having composed a staggering innings of 171 runs that included 16 fours and 1 six. Virat Kohli also notched up 76 runs off 182 balls while Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 37 runs as India declared their first innings at 421 for 5 with a healthy lead of 271 runs on Day 3.
In the second innings, the West Indies team once again failed miserably with the bat as none of their main batters got any big starts or looked to settle down at the crease and counter the Indian spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja. West Indies crumbled for a below-par total of 130 runs in 50.3 overs during the second innings. Ashwin ended up taking a total of 7 wickets and concluded with fabulous match figures of 12 for 131.
