Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has made a bold prediction that Rishabh Pant is set to break Mitchell Starc’s record of ₹24.75 crore to become the most expensive player in IPL history.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc made headlines during the IPL 2024 mini-auction when he was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a record sum of ₹24.75.

The previous record of ₹20.50 crore set by his compatriot Pat Cummins, who was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the same event.

However, according to Pathan, Rishabh Pant could eclipse these milestones in the upcoming auction.

Rishabh Pant in IPL

Pant, who made his IPL debut in 2016, has been one of the league’s standout performers. He had represented Delhi Capitals (DC) for eight seasons before being released earlier this year.

The leftie keeper has accumulated 3,284 runs at an impressive average of 35.31 and a blistering strike rate of 148.93. His record includes one century and 18 fifties.

His breakthrough season came in 2018 when he earned the Emerging Player of the Year award. That year, Pant smashed 684 runs in 14 matches at an average of 52.61 and a strike rate of 173.60, including one century and five fifties.

Ahead of the 2025 Mega IPL Auction, Pant was released by Delhi Capitals. Pant himself had hinted at his excitement, sharing a post about his potential auction price on his X account.

All eyes on IPL 2025 Mega Auction

A total of 574 players vying for 204 available slots across 10 franchises. Among them, 70 slots are reserved for overseas players. A staggering 81 players have entered the auction with a base price of ₹2 crore.

Besides Pant, the likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jos Buttler, Kagiso Rabada, Mitchell Starc, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami, David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis are up for grabs.

The auction is scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25.
