New World No 1 ODI team
Australia’s triumph in this crucial ODI not only secured them the series but also propelled them back to the No. 1 position in the Men’s ODI Team Rankings. As a result of this victory, Australia now boasts 121 points on the points table, edging ahead of Pakistan, who currently hold 120 points.
Australia’s dominance in the ODI format has been a consistent theme over the years, with the team consistently delivering commendable performances. Their ability to adapt to varying conditions and their depth of talent have made them a formidable force in limited-overs cricket.
Australia’s resurgence to the No. 1 spot was powered by an explosive batting display in SA vs AUS 2nd ODI on 9 September 2023. Travis Head and David Warner provided a blazing start to the innings, with Head achieving a quickfire half-century, while Warner notched up his 20th ODI century, showcasing his undeniable class. Marnus Labuschagne, the hero of the first ODI win, continued his brilliant form, scoring yet another century. This formidable batting performance allowed Australia to post a commanding total of 392/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
In response, South Africa initiated their chase with a rapid start but struggled to maintain momentum throughout the innings. Despite commendable contributions from Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen, the Australian bowlers, led by the exceptional Adam Zampa, kept a tight grip on the proceedings. Zampa’s four-wicket haul (4/48) proved to be the standout performance as South Africa was eventually bowled out for 269.
