“Facing a strong South Africa side provides an excellent opportunity for our team to reset and refine our game plan,” said head coach Daren Sammy. “We’ve recently played against them with mixed results, so this series should be both exciting and important. I’m confident in the squad we’ve selected, and with an eye on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know the players are eager to demonstrate their hunger for success.”
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed that star all-rounder Andre Russell has been granted a period of rest, following his participation in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup and subsequent commitments with London Spirit in The Hundred. The decision to rest Russell was made at his own request, allowing him time to recover and recharge.
In addition to Russell, former captain Jason Holder has also been rested from the 15-member squad as part of a workload management strategy. Holder has recently completed a demanding schedule, playing five consecutive Test matches—three in England and two against South Africa on home soil. Both players will work closely with the CWI science and medicine team during their time off.
“André Russell requested a period of rest and recovery, as did Jason Holder after playing five consecutive Tests against England and South Africa. They will now collaborate with the CWI science and medicine team during this period,” said Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket at CWI.
Also absent from the squad is Alzarri Joseph, the vice-captain of West Indies’ T20 World Cup team. Joseph missed the recent two-match Test series against South Africa and will continue to be sidelined. Additionally, Brandon King, who sustained a side strain during West Indies’ Super Eight clash against England in June, remains out of action.
Making a return to the squad is spin-bowling allrounder Fabian Allen, who missed the home World Cup but recently tasted success with Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in July.
