A rare test series amidst the glitz and glamour of the T20 season has started in a gripping manner between India and New Zealand. India’s first overseas assignment and one of the only 2 test series that they will play in this year hasn’t started in the way that Indians would have wanted.
The Kiwis are after the humiliating series defeat at the hands of their fellow neighbors Australia and are lagging far behind in the world test championship table. This series will be of more significance to the Kiwis more than the visitors.
Green top, overcast conditions, Indian batsmen struggle
The script went exactly as per plan for the captain cool Kane Williamson. The Kiwis skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first on a cold and overcast morning with the pitch sporting a greenish look. The Indian skipper Virat Kohli at the toss said that he would have bowled first if he had won the toss as it was a “no-brainer”.
India trusted the defense of Prithvi Shaw and their first choice opener Mayank Agarwal who were sent into see-off the new ball but what followed was a forgettable session for the Indians.
The pocket-dynamite got exposed again to the movement that was on offer for the New Zealand bowlers who broke the defense of Prithvi Shaw.
The veteran pacer Tim Southee bowled a peach to get rid off Prithvi Shaw to give the opening wicket for the Kiwis.

India reeling at the end of day 1
The Indian batsman succumbed to the early seam movement and the awkard bounce generated by the Kiwi bowlers in particular Kyle Jamieson who is having a dream debut where he picked up the important wickets of Pujara, Kohli, and Vihari.
The Indians are struck at 122 for 5 with Pant and Rahane expected to push India to a descent total in the 1st innings.
