It was the Melbourne Stars who emerged as the winner and booked themselves a place in the finals after beating Sydney Thunder in the play-off.
Batting first, the Melbourne Stars posted an intimidating first innings score of 194 for the fall of just two wickets in 20 overs of play.
In spite of losing the early wicket of Nic Maddison, Marcus Stoinis and Nick Larkin kept dominating with the bat and added a comprehensive 107 run stand for the second wicket. Nick Larkin played an unbeaten knock of 83 from just 49 deliveries with nine fours and three sixes. Whereas, star all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis a 54 ball 83 with seven fours, three sixes and a strike rate of 153.70.
Though Stoinis looked all set to bag yet another hundred in the Big Bash League this season, he ended up getting dismissed in the weirdest way possible. The 30-year-old tried to scoop a good length delivery over the fine leg region for a boundary. However, that didn’t seem to be the case as he did connect to ball but eventually crashed onto the stumps, and then went onto in the wicket-keeper Jay Lenton’s gloves. It seemed like Chris Morris had got a wicket through a hybrid event of getting him bowled/caught behind.
