Indian opener Smriti Mandhana got a lucky escape after getting out during the T20I match between India women’s and England women’s at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. After being given out by the on-field umpire, the decision was overruled by the third umpire. As the Indian vice-captain was walking off the field, the call by the third umpire stopped her as she was about to cross the boundary line.

The incident took in the second over of the Indian run chase. Katherine Brunt bowled a wide ball which was going away from Smriti Mandhana, who somehow managed to get an edge of the bat. England wicket-keeper Amy Ellen Jones dived and caught the ball properly at first. It was during the fall to the ground when the ball slowly popped off the hands of the young wicket-keeper.
The ball was in the gloves for some time but then had fallen on the ground. Jones had turned around in a way that the on-field umpire didn’t notice that the ball had actually landed on the ground before the wicket-keeper got a grab on it again.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur had already gone to the boundary after she noticed that the ball had actually popped out of Jones’ gloves. The third umpire came to the rescue of Mandhana and she was declared not out after a consultation with the on-field umpires.
