India women took on Bangladesh in the group stage encounter of the Women’s world T20 here in Perth. India had earlier won their opening game of the world T20 against the formidable Aussie side. They were high on confidence and were also favourites coming into the contest.
The match was expected to be a closely contested affair and the players didn’t disappoint the fans. There were many mini battles within the game and one such was the battle of Shafali Verma against the Bangladeshi pace bowlers.
Shafali versus Pace
Shafali Verma has made a name for herself in the big stage. All the spotlight was on her when she walked out to bat for India against neighbors Bangladesh. She was partnered up with Taniya Bhatiya instead of Smriti Mandana who missed the game due to viral fever.
Even in the previous game Shafali Verma showed everyone that she can take on the pace bowlers in the power play. Even today she scored bulk of her runs against the pacers by hitting them over the infield. Her strokes were all in the ‘V’ – Straight down the ground
Sehwag in the making!
Virender Sehwag is regarded as one of the best destructive opening batsman of his time not only for India but in the world. Shafali Verma in her brief career has showed us that she has all the attributes to be the women version of the former India opener Virender Sehwag. Shafali Verma is just 16 years old but has already been tipped to become a great batswoman.
In today’s knock she looked completely comfortable in taking on the bowlers and hitting them back over the bowlers head. Her first scoring shot itself was a six over the cover boundary of her second ball in the first over.
Fans were elated to see her going all guns blazing with the bat
Shafali Verma goes after giving a great start to India, well made 39 from just 17 balls. India Women 54/2 after powerplay! Need a good partnership here between Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodriguez.

She wasted no time in settling down which is the right approach in the power play especially with good batswoman to follow in the batting lineup. In the second over she smashed another six this time of the off spinner over mid wicket boundary. Runs continued to flow of her bat as she plundered 4 sixes and 2 fours to end up with an entertaining 39 runs from.just 17 deliveries.
