There is nothing new to dwell about the legend in Sachin Tendulkar and his achievements but on this special occasion on his 47th birthday, it is worth reliving this iconic innings played by the master himself.
On this day, 22 years ago when the master blaster turned 25, he made the whole of India to feel ecstatic with his unforgettable innings against the mighty Australians in the final of tri-nation series in Sharjah that helped the cricket crazy nation in India to overcome the two strong opponents in Australia and New Zealand to lift the coca-cola cup.
One of those days that proved why Sachin Tendulkar is bigger than the game
India weren’t a bigger threat in world cricket then when compared to what they are now at the moment. The whole of batting line up was carried by one man in Sachin Tendulkar’s shoulders throughout the 1990s. It was another such day that India needed the little master to step up to buy them a victory against all the odds and then came an enduring and everlasting innings from the master blaster who treated the Australian bowlers with disdain and took India home on the night of the finals.
India were given a healthy target of 272 on a tricky wicket that was conducive to bowling. The skipper Steve Waugh and Darren Lehmann spearheaded their innings with 70 apiece.
With an imposing target in front of them, the Indian openers stepped onto the field to give a brisk start but the things went as expected for Australia and not for India.
India started off on a steady note but Sourav Ganguly couldn’t resist the pressure as he perished after struggling his way to 23 off 42 balls. At the other end, the master blaster was going all guns blazing and kept ticking the scoreboard.
The then Indian captain in Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar stitched together a match-winning 120 run partnership in which the captain accounted for a crucial 58 from 64 balls.
But it was a one-man show all the way through as Sachin Tendulkar brought up his second consecutive 100 of the tournament against the same team.
In the end Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for 134 runs off 131 balls that helped India to win the tournament.
It was the day that even god would have bowed down in front of Sachin Tendulkar for his fantabulous innings. An innings to commemorate for all the cricket fans.
Wishes pouring in from all over the world
