Indian ladies are in Australia and have started their hunt for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Their first match of the tournament is against the defending champions and the hosts Australia who are probably the strongest side in the competition.
Not an ideal start
Things haven’t fallen in the right place for team India in the first innings. Having lost the toss, India was asked to bat first by Australia in the Showground stadium, Sydney. India lost their main premier batters for cheap scores. Smriti Mandhana went for 10 and the Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur went for 2.
Kaur gets out in a bizzare manner
The manner in which Kaur got out have ignited some criticism among the cricket fans in India. She was stumped of the bowling of Jonassen by Healey. After an impressive start by Shafali Verma, it was an ideal opportunity for Kaur to build the innings. Instead she decided to sent the ball into the orbit. She charged down the track and missed the ball completely. Healy didn’t grab the ball cleanly, but it hit her on the pads and came back to hit the stumps. Kaur was outside the crease by a mile. Even Kaur would have be devastated with her shot selection today.
Shefali impressed
Even though two stalwarts of Indian team, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t trouble the scoreboard, India’s teenage sensation and opener Shafali Verma made most of her opportunity. She gave India a quick start scoring 29 runs from 15 balls at a strike rate just below 200 making it easy for Deepti Sharma to finish the innings at the death. Deepti scored 49 runs from 46 balls taking India to a decent score. India scored 132 runs for the loss of 4 wickets, even though this is a below par score considering the batting lineup of Aussies, these knocks by Deepti and Shafali have given Indian bowlers something to defend.
