England legendary player Alastair Cook will hang his boots after the end of the 5th day of the fifth Test against India at the Oval.
Cook scripted a fairy-tale finish for his glittering career as he played a remarkable knock of 147 runs in his final innings. Wishes poured in from across the world. However, British media found a unique way of paying tribute to their hero and it commanded attention on the eve of his final day. Cook was presented with 33 beers, one for each Test hundred he scored.
Every one of the 33 beers that the media presented to the Chef had a special message inscribed on it, one from each member of the English press.
Speaking to the media, Cook said, “It has been the most surreal four days of his life.”
He also said that if his wife went into labour that night, it would have been like an icing on the cake.
“Every reception that I have received over the last four days was great. Even those overs where the whole crowd were singing my Barmy Army fan songs, it was also very special,” he added.
Alastair Cook had started his Test career against India where he had smashed a ton on his debut and he ended his career with a century against the same opponents.
Alastair Cook began his Test career in Nagpur in 2006 against India and he will be finishing his Test career against India at the Oval as England’s highest ever Test run-scorer.
On day four, James Anderson also equalled Glenn McGrath’s record of 563 Test wickets by a fast bowler with the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Shikhar Dhawan. India closed the game of day four with 58 for three with KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane batting on the crease.
India need 406 runs to win whereas England need seven wickets to win the five-matches Test series by 4-1.
