ICC women’s T20 world cup has kicked off down under with the hosts taking on the young Indian team. There were many interesting incidents on the first day of the tournament but none more than this when a delivery from Poonam Yadav bounced twice before reaching to the other end.
Poonam Yadav bowls Gardner but not without controversy
Now, match was on the line when Poonam Yadav came into the attack to bowl 18th over of the innings and final one for her quota of 4 overs. Ashleigh Gardner was doing all she can to take Australia across the line at Sydney Showground stadium in opening game of the world cup.
Poonam Yadav flighted a delivery to Gardner who wanted to hit that ball across to the vacant mid-wicket region but missed the ball due to lack of pace. Ball went through Gardner’s legs and broke the stumps. Indian team started to celebrate but Gardner stood her ground as umpires took it upstairs. Replays clearly suggested that ball had bounced twice before reaching to the striker’s end. It was declared a no-ball and decision stood as not out.

India knocks off Australia in the first game
Indian girls have started their world cup brilliantly and have put the cat among the pigeons right from the word go. After being sent in to bat, Shafali Verma was responsible for the early fireworks and took India off to a brisk start. But once she got out, middle order struggled to keep the rate going. With the help of Deepti Sharma, India posted a comparative 132 on the board.
Australia had a good start with Alyssa Healy finding some much needed form on the big stage. But she was dismissed next delivery after reaching her half century by Poonam Yadav. That was the start of India’s great comeback thanks to Poonam Yadav. She made full use of the conditions and took 4 important wickets to keep Australia in check. Ashleigh Gardner tried hard but didn’t get enough support from the other end while Shikha Pandey took 3 wickets. India beat Australia by 17 runs to register first points for the tournament.
