During the Instagram chat, Virat Kohli also pickedĀ de Villiers’s Wankhede knock as the batter’s best innings against India. It happened in 2015 when South Africa toured India. The 5 match series was level at 2-2 going into Wankhede for the decider.
Batting first, South Africa piled on the misery on the Indian bowlers and the side went on to score 438/4 in the allotted fifty overs.
De Villiers played an innings of 119 runs from just 61 balls to take South Africa to a comfortable position. Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis also scored centuries and this enabled South Africa to win the match by 214 runs.
“It was a good series, it was 2-2 heading into the final match at Wankhede, we were highly motivated and it was after the 2015 World Cup, I wanted to do well as the skipper, we had a senior group,” de Villiers told Kohli during the Instagram Live session.
“We played better cricket in the series, the odds were against us in the final game as we were batting first, if we would have scored 350, you would have won the match, so registering 400 was important,” he added.
First bilateral ODI series win for Proteas in India
Known for his ability to destroy any bowling attack, de Villiers toyed with Indian bowlers such that even as a packed Wankhede Stadium crowd started chanted “ABD, ABD, ABD…” His 119 runs came off 61 balls, which included 11 sixes and three fours, at an strike rate of over 195.
Proteas set India a 439-run target, and then returned to bowl out MS Dhoni & Co for 224, to register a 214-run win. South Africa thus went onto win their first bilateral series in India, while India suffered their worst at home and second-worst defeat in history, in terms of runs.
The same year, before coming to India, he scored both the fastest ODI fifty and hundred off 16 and 31 balls respectively, against West Indies in January.
