Ever since Babar Azam made his international debut for Pakistan, the right-handed batsman has been performing consistently for his country. Azam is the number one batsman in the T20I rankings and comparisons with the Indian skipper Virat Kohli have been drawn quite a few times by legendary players. Kohli is without a doubt World’s Best batsman now with runs in all formats. A former Pakistan captain has now joined in the conversation by saying that both the players are on the same level.
“He is the same league as Virat”: Mushtaq Muhammad on Babar Azam
Mushtaq Muhammad came out saying that Babar Azam is in the same league as Virat Kohli. He pointed out that the new Pakistan T20I captain doesn’t get to play many Test matches. “Kohli might be a better player and more experienced but Babar is a top batsman and in the same league but he doesn’t get too many Tests in a year,” the former Pakistan all-rounder said.
Muhammad further added, “Kohli is lucky to have such a group of players to pick from but he is also a good tactical skipper. Technique wise, if you see, then Indian players are getting better day by day”. The 76-year old said that Babar Azam is also a world-class player but he doesn’t get the same amount of opportunities like Virat Kohli to showcase his talent at the world stage.
Mushtaq Muhammad praises Kohli and BCCI
The former Pakistan skipper then praised Indian cricket for their success in the recent few years. “Indian cricket is at top right now and look at the number of matches they play at home which helps to perform better in overseas conditions. In comparison, Pakistan hardly plays regular Test cricket.”
The veteran also said that it’s unfortunate that politics is the main reason why India and Pakistan don’t play bilateral series and it’s hurting world cricket. He had also praised the Indian board for not allowing the players to participate in foreign leagues which allows them to focus on their India performances.
Mushtaq Muhammad had led Pakistan to several famous Test wins, in both home and away conditions during the 1970s. He was also the head coach of the Pakistan team which made it to the final of the World Cup 1999.
