The 14th edition of Indian Premier League is off and running. In the first week of the tournament, matches have provided much needed entertainment during these times to all the cricket fans. And there was no shortage of controversies in yesterday’s game between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings as well. In otherwise a low-scoring game, a moment or two of mistakes by umpires kept all the fans guessing.

OUT or NOT OUT?

Chasing a moderate 107 from 20 overs, CSK opener Faf du Plessis was struggling a bit on the crease with his timing on a sluggish pitch. But he was anchoring the chase for CSK until the 14th over when Riley Meredith came on to bowl. He banged a delivery short and Faf du Plessis tried to pull it over to the square-leg region. He didn’t make connection and PBKS players started appealing straight away. Umpire Anil Chaudhary was sure about a nick but unsure about height of the delivery. He consulted the third umpire for the same and he found it legal. As a result, on-field umpire declared the batsmen as ‘Out’.

Faf du Plessis took the review as soon as the decision came. In player’s review when third umpire had to check ultra-edge, third umpire found nothing on snicko. As a result, on-field umpire had to overturn his decision. Faf du Plessis survived on the crease but not so without any drama.

Chennai dominate Punjab Again!

Even after rechristening, Punjab Kings failed to break their traditional struggles against Chennai Super Kings. Bowling first after winning the toss, CSK bowlers made full use of the early dampness in Wankhede pitch. Deepak Chahar was the main destroyer as he picked 4 for just 13 runs from his 4 overs. Apart from Shahrukh Khan, no Punjab batsman made a fight out of it as PBKS were reduced to 106 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Moeen Ali broke the back of the chase with his quick-fire 46 as Faf du Plessis anchored the chase with an unbeaten knock. Chennai chased down the total inside 16 overs with the loss of just 4 wickets. Deepak Chahar was declared ‘Man of the Match’ for his heroics with the ball.
