Australian batter Travis Head re-enters the Indian Premier League (IPL) scene after a seven-year hiatus, with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) clinching his services for ₹6.80 crore during the 2024 mini-auction in Dubai.
His inclusion in the auction sparked an immediate bidding frenzy between SRH and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), both vying for a top-order batting addition to their squads.
Head showcased his mettle in the recent ODI World Cup, contributing significantly to Australia’s triumph with a standout century in the final against India. His stellar performances earned him the prestigious ICC Player of the Month award for November. The southpaw also featured in the recent T20I series against India, displaying his prowess away from home.
With 107 T20 matches under his belt, Head has thrived, particularly in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) with the Adelaide Strikers. Initially known for his middle-order exploits, he has transitioned to a successful top-order role.
Throughout his T20 career, Head has amassed 2,494 runs at an average of 27.71 and an impressive strike rate of 134.15. Apart from his dynamic batting, his off-spin has accounted for 22 wickets at an economy rate of 8.45.
Head had previously represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for two seasons (2016-2017), registering 10 appearances and scoring 205 runs at a strike rate of 138.51.
While SRH currently boasts an opening combination of Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma, the team underwent alterations in the 2023 season, experimenting with the batting order. With the addition of Head, SRH now has diverse combinations to explore, seeking a rejuvenated strategy after struggling to make an impact in recent editions.
