Three teams other than England who can score 500 in ODI cricket

England recently reached the zenith of ODI batting as they stormed their way to a record score of 6-481 against Australia at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, having overpowered their previous record of 3-444 against Pakistan at the same venue two years ago.

Jonny Bairstow (139), who struck his 6th hundred in his last 18 games started the on-slaught along with Jason Roy (82) and was ably carried forward by Alex Hales (147 off 92 balls) and Eoin Morgan (67 off 30 balls). England thrashed 21 sixes and 41 boundaries in becoming the first side to reach 450 in ODI history.

Only once in the history of List A cricket- when Surrey scored 4-496 against Gloucestershire in 2007- has any side scored more. At one stage, England looked on-course to breach the 500-run barrier, and with the kind of line-up they have, it is a matter of time before they surpass the unimaginable.

In this article today, we’ll have a look at the teams other than England who can possibly breach Mt. 500 in the near future:-

#3 South Africa 

The first team to successfully chase down 400 plus total in a one-day international, South Africa holds the record for the most number of 400 plus totals (six) in white-ball cricket, and the last instance of them racking up came against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai back in 2015.

While AB de Villiers may have retired from International Cricket, the Proteas still has a plethora of batting depth and firepower in the form of Miller, Klaasen, Markram, de Kock and Faf du Plessis to breach the 500-run barrier in the foreseeable future.

#2 New Zealand

The perennial dark horses of cricket, Kane Williamson’s New Zealand have always managed to punch above their weight and recede expectations.

New Zealand registered their first ever 400 plus total back in 2008 against Ireland. Former skipper Brendon McCullum scored a swashbuckling 166 off 135 balls in that game, as the Kiwis racked up 2-402. McCullum’s tenure as a skipper was a key point in New Zealand history as he instilled raw aggression and taking the game to the opposition, kinda attitude which has been valiantly carried forward by Kane Williamson in his own way.

New Zealand boasts of a formidable batting order in Martin Guptill (one of the five players to score an ODI double hundred- 237 vs WI, WC 2015), Colin Munro, Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Williamson, and Colin de Granddomme, and it won’t come as a surprise if they go on to breech Mt. 500 in days to come.

#3 India

The first team to have breached the 300-mark barrier for a record 100 times and second in the list in terms of amassing 400 plus totals (five times), the Men in Blue have well and truly been a batting powerhouse in World Cricket.

India breached the 400-run mark for the first time during their infamous 2007 World Cup campaign with an imposing 5-413 against Bermuda, and their three 400 plus totals have featured a double-hundred- Sachin Tendulkar 200* vs SA, 2010, Virender Sehwag 219 vs WI, 2011, and Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking 264 vs SL in 2014.

The current Indian ODI team boasts of a formidable batting-unit in Sharma, Dhawan, Kohli, Raina, Rahul, Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, and with the team scheduled to tour England for a 3-match ODI series, expect some fireworks and record-breaking numbers
