IPL 2021 Controversies: The Indian Premier League has never been short on drama and controversies and the IPL 2021 was no different. From Ishan Kishan’s unexpected omission from Mumbai Indians’ playing 11 to Ajinkya Rahane being treated badly by the Delhi Capitals, India’s cash-rich tournament kept everyone on their toes, through one reason or another. In addition, players pulling out from the IPL 2021 citing Covid-19 threats was always a foreboding feeling. A disaster waiting to happen. But one particular incident flooded social media like nothing else.
IPL 2021 Controversies
Sunrisers Hyderabad never looked back after appointing David Warner as captain in 2015 with the Orange Army landing its maiden IPL title in 2016. Even more importantly, Warner and SRH seemed a match made in heaven. The mercurial Australian was loved by the fans and he repaid the faith by scoring heavily. He won three Orange Caps in five seasons. That’s unprecedented in IPL.
However, the poor form and Warner’s apparently low strike rate cited as the reasons, SRH decided to move on from David Warner when they handed the captaincy to Kane Williamson.
But the fans couldn’t buy the fact that Warner was not even considered as a batsman in his first game as non-captain against Rajasthan Royals, a game that SRH lost by 55 runs.
Warner’s teammate Shreevats Goswami has now opened up on how the players reacted after David Warner was removed as captain and what was the atmosphere like inside the SRH dressing room.
“Obviously, if you ask David or Kane or the management, there has to be a different angle to it. We as domestic players – especially me who hasn’t played a lot of games and hasn’t gotten involved too much in these decisions – it was quite ok for us,” Shreevats Goswami said.
“Look, it didn’t really affect the players. I mean, it was a tough call on the management’s part but it wasn’t dropped on players. We were quite ok with the whole situation. Yes, there will be a bit of remorse in certain players with that decision but I think we were in good spirits and looking to contribute towards the team’s success in the remaining games,” Goswami added.
David Warner IPL 2021:
Though the decision to sack David Warner as captain seems unfair if we look at what he has done for the franchise over the years, there’s no denying the fact that there’s some substance behind SRH management’s thinking behind the decision.
Will England Host The IPL 2021?
Warner managed 193 runs in 6 games, and though that return is decent enough, the fact that the Australian scored those runs at a 110.29 strike rate, indicate that Warner may be on the decline.
