Team ‘lacks confidence and character’: Ganguly

Team India’s abysmal performance in the second Test is gaining criticism from all areas. The latest is India’s ex-captain Sourav Ganguly, who voiced his disappointment with India’s batsmen in a stern language.

While speaking with a TV channel, Ganguly said, “It’s a batting unit which has been claustrophobic in conditions with swing and seam. It’s a batting order which lacks confidence. The wicket did a bit, but poor technique and lack of confidence added to it.” The former Indian captain added, “Not enough character, not enough fight and that’s a worrying factor.”

Ganguly was a part of the Indian team that won the Test series in England in 2007 and he has substantial experience of batting in England. In fact, the left-hand batsman made his debut in England with a thumping hundred.  As an advice to the Indian batsmen, he said that the team needs to address the issue of ‘number of times the ball went behind the stumps’ immediately.

At the same time, Ganguly didn’t hold back while praising the English bowling unit. “It was a good toss to win for England. Perfect conditions for James Anderson. Chris Woakes, the way he bowled was fantastic. It’s terrific fast bowling,” he said.

The former Indian captain was sceptical about India’s chances in the Test. He said it will be tough for India to pull back things after such a poor performance. He commented, “200 would have actually given India a chance on this pitch in the second innings. But just a hundred on this type of a surface is not good enough.”

He also pointed out that other batsmen in the team need to step up and shoulder responsibility with Virat Kohli. “Everyone has got to be on their own to take this team ahead. Not wait and watch what Virat Kohli dos and act accordingly,” he said.

After dismantling India for a mere 107 runs, England have made a solid progression on the third day of the Test match. The home team has scored 357 runs for six wickets and are enjoying a lead of 250 runs courtesy of Chris Woakes’ maiden Test hundred and Johnny Bristow’s 93 runs.
