On this day in 1971, former India captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar made his Test debut against West Indies and took the world by storm by amassing 774 runs in his debut series. On his Test debut’s 50th anniversary, many cricketers and followers took to social media platforms to congratulate the legendary cricketer turned commentator on this special occasion.
Happy 50th in international cricket, Mr. Gavaskar: Tendulkar
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter and other social media platforms to pay tribute to his idol. “50 years ago today, he took the Cricketing World by storm. He scored 774 runs in his debut series and each one of us had a hero to look up to. India won the series in the West Indies and then in England and all of a sudden the sport in India had a new meaning. As a young boy, I knew I had someone to look up to and try and be like him. That has never changed,” Tendulkar wrote in a post.

50 years since the great Sunil Gavaskar made his test debut and announced himself to the world. My elder brother @bhogle used to keep a scrap book and that is how I got drawn in. Gavaskar soon became a symbol of hope for us. I followed Indian cricket through his performances.
