David Warner IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad made a bold decision to appoint Kane Williamson as the captain of the franchise. Williamson replaced David Warner. The franchise also made it clear that ‘there will be a change in the overseas combination for the match against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.’ This means David Warner could be dropped for the clash against RR and this raises the question, who will replace him?
Jason Roy or Jason Holder – Who will replace David Warner?
Replacing Warner would be a tough ask as the left-hander is one of the most consistent openers in IPL over the years. This season too he has made two fifties in 6 games and has piled up 193 runs at an average of 32.16.

If SRH goes for a like-to-like replacement, they have the option of Jason Roy. The England opener bats aggressively and has a reputation of batting fearlessly.
Although Roy has been successful in international cricket, he still hasn’t found his mojo in IPL. He has played only 8 IPL games scoring 179 runs at an average of 29.83 and a strike rate of 133.58. He played his last IPL game in 2018. He is often seen as vulnerable against spinners and that has been a reason for IPL franchises’ lack of interest in him.
Jason Holder is the other option for SRH to replace Warner. Holder strengthens the middle-order as he is an effective batter. He could help Williamson in batting more freely as Holder would take care of the middle order. Plus the West Indies cricketer is a handy bowler and can bowl four overs in a game. He is tall and extracts more bounce from the surface. That makes him an attacking option, especially on batting-friendly surfaces.

With Manish Pandey finding form and K Williamson given captaincy, SRH’s middle order looks set. Pandey, Williamson, and K Jadhav would form the core of the middle order with J Bairstow as the opener.

If SRH brings in J Roy, the top order looks great but that leaves the lower middle order vulnerable. Having J Holder in the playing XI, beefs up the middle order and SRH can use someone like Wriddhiman Saha as a pinch-hitter at the top of the order. Holder’s presence can also help SRH to replace V Shankar with a bowler allowing the team more resources in the bowling department.
