Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006. He was impressive but India’s strong spin attack consisting of Kumble and Harbhajan meant he had to wait for his turn. IPL was a game-changing moment for Ashwin. He made his debut for Chennai Super Kings and performed fairly well there. His ability to produce effective spells with new ball and his variations made him a difficult bowler to face. His carrom ball was particularly effective during his early days. Presently, he plays IPL for Rajasthan Royals (2023).
Ashwin played a strong role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph producing wickets in crucial moments. After impressive performances in limited-over games, Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011. In pitches supporting spin and turn, Ashwin became a dangerous bowler and his picked up a lot of wickets in India. But as the time has passed, he has made himself a potent weapon in overseas conditions too. He played crucial roles in India’s overseas victories over Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
Over the years, India’s preference of legspinners in shorter formats has put Ashwin out of ODIs and T20Is. But he still enjoys a decent record in these formats and backs himself to do well whenever he gets an opportunity. In Test cricket though, he remains a pivotal part of India’s bowling lineup.
