St. Lucia Stars needed something special to end their winless streak of 747 days and it came from their captain Kieron Pollard who hammered 104 runs off 54 balls against Barbados Tridents to register a 38 run victory.
Pollard’s maiden T20 century was powered by six fours and eight sixes and this mammoth performance propelled Stars to 226, a score their bowlers defended with ease in the end.
The Stars captain walked in to the crease at a nervous situation of three down for 57 runs and took his time to settle down. He ensured no further damaged was inflicted and added 148 runs for the fourth wicket with Andre Fletcher who smashed 80 runs off 52 balls.
Fletcher especially was more brutal as he drilled Raymon Riefer for three consecutive sixes in the 17th over. Just when Fletcher looked unstoppable he was removed by Wahab Riaz. Fletcher slammed six sixes and six fours. But the damage was already been done and Pollard completed his century with a six in the final over to end the innings at 226 after 20 overs.
In reply, Tridents could only manage to get 188 runs. Qais Ahmad dried the runs in the middle overs to ensure Tridents stayed behind the asking rate throughout the innings. He conceded only 29 runs in his four overs and also picked up crucial wickets of Dwayne Smith and Hashim Amla. Apart from Smith’s 58 runs no one from Tridents was able to deliver a significant contribution.
With this win, St. Lucia Stars ended their draught of wins which stretched for 15 games and almost two seasons of CPL.
After this loss, Tridents are at number four in the points table with two points from two games while Stars are the bottom with one win in five games.
