India had sailed into the quarterfinals of U-19 World Cup after defeating New Zealand by 44 runs (via DLS) at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. Before that, they had registered comprehensive victories in their first two group stage games against Sri Lanka and Japan.
India finished at the top of the group A points table in the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2020 League stage with three wins from as many matches.
Today, they are taking on Australia in the quarter-final, who finished second in group B. Australia won two and lost one out of their three group matches. They finished with four points with a handsome net run rate of + 1.255.
India denied ‘Obstructing the Field’
It all happened during the Australia U-19 chase on the second ball of the 8th over, Sushanth Mishra bowled a good length delivery on the stumps to Fanning. He mistimed the ball towards mid-on and was outside the crease, the fielder threw at the stumps which was definitely not on the target but Fanning used his left hand to stop the ball as he tried to ground his bat with the right hand. It didn’t look that he did that supposedly. The ground umpires gave the soft signal as “Not Out” on which the Third Umpire agreed and decided that Fanning was not “Obstructing the Field” when the ball hit his hand.

Earlier in the day, Australia u-19 won the crucial toss & decided to bowl first. At one stage India were lagging at 144-6 in 38 overs but unbeaten 54-ball 55 by Atharva Ankolekar and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s patience at the top helped India post 233/9 at the end of 50 overs. The Rajasthan Royals pick Jaiswal was dismissed on 62(82) by Tanveer Sangha and his innings included four boundaries and two maximums.
The Indian bowlers were never going to make this chase an easy one. Kartik Tyagi ripped apart the Australian top-order as they lost four early wickets in the 234-run chase. He picked three wickets in his first two overs, while openers Jake Fraser-McGurk returned to the pavilion without facing a single delivery.
Looking at the way the team is playing right now, it seems that they are cruising towards a win to book their place in semi-finals of this mega event.
