Most Expensive Player in Women’s Premier League

Mumbai hosted the much-awaited Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 auction. There were a maximum of 90 slots to be filled within the five teams viz. Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, and UP Warriorz.

Apart from Mandhana, the Indian vice-captain, in-for Ash Gardner and Nat Sciver-Brunt turned out to be the most expensive overseas signings of the Women’s Premier League auction. Gardner is an Aussie all-rounder and can bowl off-spin with explosive batting performances on the field. Sciver, on the other hand, can bowl at a medium pace and can be a handy batter in the middle order too. Besides, all other three on the list, not so surprisingly, are Indian players.

A total of 449 players underwent the hammer. Among these, 269 are Indians and 179 are from foreign countries, including 19 from Associate countries. Overall, there’re 202 capped cricketers, 227 are uncapped, and 19 players are not part of those lists.

Each team needed to sign six overseas players including one from an associate nation. The teams are allowed to keep five overseas players in the starting XI and one of them has to be from an associate nation. The purse for auction was given 12 crore INR and each franchise is allowed to buy a minimum of 15 players and a maximum of 18.

The international players had to choose their base price at INR 30 lakh or INR 40 lakh or INR 50 lakh. While the uncapped players had their base prices at INR 10 lakh and INR 20 lakh.
The tournament will commence on March 4 and the final will be played on March 26, 2023.
