When a player like Michael Hussey speaks, you just listen. After all, the former Australian cricketer was coronated as Mr Cricket in his heyday, for the obvious reason that he possessed a sharp cricket brain.
Hussey was speaking to Sanjay Manjrekar in ESPNcricinfo’s Videocast where he claimed that former Indian World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni was the best-ever finisher in the One-Day cricket, due to his “mental capability,” and “unbelievable power“.
“Dhoni can keep his cool and make the opposition captain blink first. Dhoni also has unbelievable power. He knows that when he needs to clear the ropes he can do it. He has that kind of self-belief. Honestly, I didn’t have that kind of belief in myself.”
Hussey himself was famous for finishing the games, so the “best-ever” prefix he used for his former IPL teammate is some statement from him. He also said that it may be a little bit controversial, for there have been some great finishers in the past. But the 44-year-old added that what makes Dhoni unique is his mental capability, and the coolness to read the situation.
“The other thing he has that not many other finishers have is unbelievable power. He knows when he needs to clear the ropes, and he can do it. I didn’t have that kind of belief in myself. Dhoni….his mental capability, coolness and power, he knew he could find a six when he needed it and he did it so consistently. I think his confidence grew in his methods, so in my mind he is the best.”
Hussey also draws comparison with his former international teammate Ricky Ponting and Dhoni, saying that the duo was more or less the same in some aspects. Like, both didn’t hang on to the defeats for too long and were always the first to move on from the bad results.
Dhoni has had an illustrious career, winning everything the game offered. He guided India to title wins in both T20 and 50-over World Cup, and is one of the most successful captains in the IPL history, having won three titles with Chennai Super Kings.
