Mark Boucher has been named the head coach of the Mumbai Indians (MI), the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most successful franchise. Boucher will take over the position from the IPL 2023.
Boucher will replace Mahela Jayawardene, the former Sri Lanka great and MI’s previous coach who has been given the responsibility of ‘Global Head of Performance,’ by the franchise.

The South African veteran started his coaching career with no prior experience, back in August 2016 with the Titans, a domestic Proteas team, and guided his side to win five different titles. Furthermore, Boucher has been coaching the South African national men’s cricket team since December 2019.
Boucher himself was a wicketkeeper batter in the South African setup between October 1997 to January 2012. He has also played in the IPL from 2009 to 2011 editions of the tournament, representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders, then.

Boucher has more than 10,000 international runs and an experience of 442 international derbies in his account. He was also a part of Proteas’ Commonwealth Games squad, who won the Gold medal in the 1998 Kuala Lampur games. He was honored with the ‘Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year’ award in 2009. In July 2012, while playing against Somerset, a stump bail hit his left eye and caused a severe injury, which forced him to retire earlier than he had planned.
Boucher after Jayawardene
Boucher will now have big shoes to fill, as, under Jayawardene’s guidance since 2017, MI have won three IPL trophies. The side, however, also hit rock bottoms but have come back stronger than ever, every time.

MI’s forgettable IPL 2022 RUN
Besides, MI will be finding their lost rhythm after an awful run in the IPL 2022, where the side endured eight successive defeats to add a few points to their account and finished the season at the eighth position. With an exciting bunch of athletes in the camp, the five-time champions will be seeking another title-winning stint with the new head coach.
