In a massive breaking news development, left-handed batsman Nitish Rana has been announced as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain (KKR) for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Kolkata Knight Riders did not had the best of fortunes during the last season of the IPL where they even failed to qualify for the playoffs under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer who is currently recovering from a back injury. KKR will be taking on the Punjab Kings in Mohali during their opening game in IPL 2023 season on 1 April, 2023.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have finally released an official statement where they have appointed Nitish Rana as the KKR captain for IPL 2023 in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. KKR team management is also very much hopeful that Iyer will be taking part in the Indian Premier League 2023 season at some point of time after fully recovering from his back injury. Rana has been part of the KKR team for a while now and the southpaw has scored more than 300 runs in each of the five seasons for Kolkata Knight Riders since 2018. The 29-year-old has scored more than 2100 runs from 91 IPL matches so far at a strike-rate of nearly 135 that includes as many as 15 half-centuries.

“While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job,” a release from the KKR franchise stated.

“We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” the statement added.
