Jasprit Bumrah returns as India captain
Bumrah had been sidelined since September 2022 due to a persistent back injury issue, which resulted in his absence from the T20 World Cup in Australia. His last appearance was in a T20I series against Australia in September 2022. The injury eventually led him to undergo successful surgery in New Zealand in March 2023. Post-surgery, Bumrah diligently underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Earlier in July, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had expressed confidence in Bumrah’s readiness for a return to action, and now the news has been officially confirmed. This comeback is especially good news for the ODI team, as the star pacer will be available for the ODI World Cup. It is highly likely that Bumrah will also be part of the Asia Cup squad for the continental tournament commencing on August 30.
Prasidh Krishna, another promising talent, is also making his return to the squad after being sidelined due to a stress fracture. The Indian team management had earmarked Prasidh as a key option for the ODI World Cup, and his inclusion in the upcoming series in Ireland highlights his significance to the team.
Alongside Prasidh, players like Mukesh Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Avesh Khan have been selected for the 3-match T20I series in Ireland. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is set to lead the India men’s cricket team in the Asian Games 2023, has been appointed as vice-captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma, who will also be part of the squad for a 5-match T20I series against the West Indies in the first week of August, have been named in the squad.
Sanju Samson will take on the role of first-choice wicketkeeper, while Punjab Kings’ star Jitesh Sharma makes a comeback as the second wicketkeeper. All-rounder Washington Sundar and left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed have been named in the squad as well.
Shivam Dube, who last played a T20I for India in February 2022, makes his return to the squad. The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder had an impressive run in the IPL 2023, scoring 418 runs in 16 matches at an average of 38.00 and a strike rate of over 158. His performance showcased his ability to score quickly and handle pressure, particularly against spinners, as he hit 30 sixes during the season.
