IPL mega auction is more or less confirmed at this point in time. Some teams will have their task cut out in choosing their top 4 players for retention while some teams don’t have the headache as there are very few worthy of being retained.
Next IPL auction: Four players who could be retained
According to some unconfirmed sources, a team can retain a total of 4 players that can be a combination of either 3 Indians and 1 foreigner or 2 Indians and 2 foreigners.
Mumbai Indians
They have the toughest task when it comes to retention. The skipper Rohit Sharma, fast bowling superstar Jasprit Bumrah, and all rounder Hardik Pandya are direct choices with Kieron Pollard being the 4th option. This means they will have to leave out Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.
- Rohit Sharma
- Jasprit Bumrah
- Hardik Pandya
- Kieron Pollard
Delhi Capitals
They might have to make the tough choice of leaving out Shikhar Dhawan and Anrich Nortje to retain the other 4 superstars.
- Shreyas Iyer
- Rishabh Pant
- Prithvi Shaw
- Kagiso Rabada
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Assuming the South African legend AB de Villiers plays IPL 2022, they will have some straightforward choices.
- Virat Kohli
- AB de Villiers
- Yuzvendra Chahal
- Mohammad Siraj
Sunrisers Hyderabad
They might not retain 4 players and might want to build a proper all round squad by having a large purse. The players likely to be retained by SRH are
- Rashid Khan
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- Kane Williamson
Chennai Super Kings
According to CSK CEO, MS Dhoni might play another 2 years and that would mean Suresh Raina playing for the same number of years as well. This makes the lives of CSK management easier as their choices would be obvious.
- MS Dhoni
- Suresh Raina
- Ravindra Jadeja
- Sam Curran
Kolkata Knight Riders
Similar to SRH, they might not retain more than 2 players. They definitely don’t want to lock themselves by retaining Pat Cummins and Eoin Morgan who were disappointing for KKR in the last 2 years. If KKR have plans to retain 4 players, these are the players worthy of retaining,
- Andre Russell
- Shubman Gill
- Varun Chakravarthy
- Lockie Ferguson
Punjab Kings
They have an excellent core and they can surely build a brilliant squad around these 4 players.
- KL Rahul
- Mayank Agarwal
- Mohammad Shami
- Nicholas Pooran/Jhye Richardson
Rajasthan Royals
They might have to make some really tricky decisions in retaining the 4 players. They have some exciting talents like Karthik Tyagi and Riyan Parag but the likes of Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and Jofra Archer are ahead in the pecking order.
- Sanju Samson
- Jos Buttler
- Jofra Archer
- Kartik Tyagi
