AB de Villiers, former player of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), revealed his favorite player of IPL 2023, and it came as a surprise that it wasn’t Shubman Gill or Virat Kohli. Despite the Rajasthan Royals failing to qualify for the playoffs, Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased impressive cricket throughout the tournament.
The young opener emerged as the highest run-scorer for RR and currently ranks fourth in the race for the Orange Cap. In 14 matches, Jaiswal scored 625 runs with an average of 48.08 and a strike rate of 163.61. He also hit a century and five half-centuries, with a highest score of 124.

Jaiswal, an uncapped player, garnered attention due to his shot selection and ability to find gaps in the field. His impact was so significant that fans almost forgot about the out-of-form star opener Jos Buttler. Speaking on JioCinema, AB de Villiers expressed his admiration for Jaiswal and named him his favorite player of IPL 2023.
“For me, it’s Yashasvi Jaiswal by a significant margin. He is a young player who has a wide range of shots in his arsenal. He maintains a calm and composed temperament at the crease, and I love how he dominates the bowlers while always looking in control,” de Villiers said. “Shubman is slightly older, but I believe Jaiswal has a long way to go, and he possesses all the qualities to become a great player,” he added.
Rajasthan Royals finished the league phase in fifth place, missing out on the playoffs. They secured 14 points in 14 matches, winning seven and losing seven. Jaiswal’s impact was crucial, especially as Buttler struggled after a promising start to the season. The previous season’s Orange Cap winner, Buttler, set an unwanted record in the team’s last league game against the Punjab Kings, recording the most number of ducks in a single season (5). Although Buttler performed well in his first four matches of the season with scores of 54, 19, 79, and 52, his form declined, and he only managed one more score of 50 or more (96 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad). He was dismissed for five ducks in the subsequent 10 matches.
