SRH’s IPL Auction Strategy : The Sunrisers Hyderabad had an impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) season last year as the David Warner-led team finished third on the points table with seven win and as many losses in the tournament. After winning their maiden IPL trophy in 2016, SRH have performed fairly well but the search for their second title still hasn’t been unlocked. With just three days to go for the exciting and much-awaited IPL 2021 Player auction, just like all other franchises, SRH team owners and management have started to build their strategies and preparing for the marquee event.
However, going into the upcoming auction event, SRH will be quite relieved and chilled out as they have just a maximum of four slots available with one spot for an overseas cricketer. Ahead of the IPL 2021 edition, SRH released the likes of Billy Stanlake, Sanjay Yadav, Yarra Prithviraj, Fabien Allen and B Sandeep. They will be entering this year’s auction with the most minimal purse of Rs 10.75 crores. Thus, it will be very much interesting to see their strategy in the upcoming auction. Here we look at the five players SRH will target in the IPL 2021 auction:
1. Shakib Al Hasan
With a base price of Rs 2 crores, Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is back into reckoning after serving 1 year ban following his contact with a bookie. Shakib has been one of the most impactful players in the history of the IPL and SRH was the last team he played for in IPL 2019. In 63 IPL games, the southpaw has scored 746 runs and has also picked up 59 wickets with an economy of 7.46.
With two spin bowling all-rounders in Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and seam-bowling all-rounders in Mitchell Marsh and Jason Holder, it will be quite interesting to see whether SRH will get back Shakib in the upcoming auction. With the forthcoming IPL edition likely to be held in India, Shakib can be a crucial part of the playing XI alongside Rashid Khan.

2. Mohammed Azharuddeen
After his astounding knock of 137 runs off just 54 balls that included 9 fours and 11 sixes against Mumbai in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Kerala’s swashbuckling batsman Mohammed Azharuddeen has surely done enough to attract big bids in the upcoming IPL 2021 auction. With youngsters like Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma failing to leave a mark in IPL 2020, SRH could be very much interested to buy an explosive middle-order batsman.
Azharuddeen will be entering the auction with a base price of Rs 20 lakhs, he could prove to be a handy option for SRH. In the last few years of the IPL, SRH has nurtured a lot of talented cricketers and thus, it will certainly be a great learning curve for the youngster in case he gets to be a part of the franchise. It will be interesting to see whether young Azharuddeen is able to get his maiden IPL contract this year or not.

3. Glenn Maxwell
In the last three IPL seasons, it has been seen that SRH were too dependent on the trio of David Warner, Johnny Bairstow and Kane Williamson to do the majority of the run-scoring. With the possible inclusion of Australia’s swashbuckling batsman Glenn Maxwell, SRH could get the services of an experienced T20 batsman who has played a lot of cricket across the globe.
Although, Maxwell did have a poor season last year while playing for Kings XI Punjab with just 108 runs in the entire tournament, but the Aussie batsman did well in the recently concluded BBL season. With their purse of 10.75 crores and Maxwell’s base price being Rs 2 crores, SRH could go all guns blazing for Glenn Maxwell to fill their only vacant overseas cricketer slot.

4. Kyle Jamieson
New Zealand’s lanky paceman Kyle Jamieson will surely be attracting some massive bidding wars in the upcoming IPL 2021 Player auction due to his recent exploits in international cricket. With a height of 6ft 6 inches, Jamieson has the ability of clocking over 140 km/hr on a consistent which could prove to be quite vital in the Indian conditions and thus, SRH will be eager to get him in their side.
Although, Jamieson hasn’t played a lot of T20I cricket, but he can be the perfect the replacement for SRH in case any of their seam-bowling all-rounders in Mitchell Marsh or Jason Holder gets injured during the season. Jamieson can also be the sure shot replacement for Billy Stanlake who has been released ahead of the auction and the Kiwi fast bowler will also surely add variety in the SRH bowling attack.

5. Shivam Dube
There are not many seam-bowling Indian all-rounders available in the upcoming IPL 2021 auction and thus, someone like Shivam Dube will be a player to watch out for courtesy his explosive exploits with the bat and a handy bowler. Dube has been released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and SRH could be very much interested in buying the left-handed batsman. In 11 IPL games last season, Dube scored 129 runs and also picked up four wickets with the ball.
However, it is also a fact that RCB failed to utilize the all-rounder’s services in the IPL 2020 season. With a base price of 50 lakhs, SRH should be able to get Dube well within their budget and the all-rounder could very much walk straight into the playing XI. Over the years, SRH has been seen quite interested in procuring talented Indian players in the auction.
