IPL 2025 MI Retention List: Which 5 Players will be retained?

Mumbai Indians had a terrible run in the IPL 2024 as the five-time champions finished the league stage at the bottom of the points table with only 4 wins and 10 defeats under their belt. Despite having a star-studded squad, the Mumbai-based franchise failed to utilize its resources and crumbled like a house of cards in the IPL 2024.
The big decision of bringing Hardik Pandya back from Gujarat Titans in a head-turning trade ahead of the season alongside the few auction mistakes in the last couple of seasons also came back to haunt Mumbai Indians.
There will be a mega auction ahead of the IPL 2025 and Mumbai Indians will look to assemble a strong and talented squad to bring back the glory days. While there is no clarification about the retentions yet, the IPL governing council might allow five retentions alongside, including two foreign players and one Right to Match (RTM) card for every franchise.
Hence, in this post, we will take a look at the five players Mumbai Indians could retain for the IPL 2025.
1 – Jasprit Bumrah
It should be a no-brainer as Jasprit Bumrah is the best fast bowler in the world across the formats currently. He is a genuine wicket-taker and he rarely gives anything away. The right-arm pacer is a rare commodity and Mumbai Indians might not able to buy him back if he goes into the auctions. Jasprit Bumrah bagged 20 wickets in the IPL 2024 at a miserable economy rate of 6.48, underlining his importance.
2 – Hardik Pandya
Thinking of the future ahead of Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians pulled off a heist by trading Hardik Pandya with Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal ahead of the IPL 2024. Despite all the bashing from the fans, one thing is for sure, there is no other Indian all-rounder who can stand alongside Hardik Pandya currently. Hardik Pandya is a hard-hitting middle-order batter who could give you four overs of pace bowling. The Baroda all-rounder could only muster 216 runs with the bat but he bagged 11 wickets with the ball in the IPL 2024. The lack of such Indian talent in the auction pool will make Mumbai Indians retain their skipper in the IPL 2025.
3 – Suryakumar Yadav
He is the number one T20 batter in the world at the moment. Suryakumar Yadav has the ability to win matches single-handedly with his unorthodox explosive batting, making him one of the most sought-after talents. If his name pops up in the auctions, all franchises will run after him and Mumbai Indians might not get back their prized asset back again. Furthermore, he is the leader of their batting unit and one of the pillars of their Indian core. Hence, Mumbai Indians are expected to retain Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the IPL 2024.
4 – Tilak Varma
Mumbai Indians are known to invest in the future and Tilak Varma is their present and the future. The left-handed batter was the only shining light in their otherwise dismal campaign in the IPL 2024, scoring 416 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 149.64. The left-handed southpaw is a compact middle-overs batter who could serve the franchise for many years.
5 – Ishan Kishan
Mumbai Indians might release Ishan Kishan ahead of the mega auctions for the IPL 2025 after a disappointing season with the bat. However, we all know that the franchise rates the youngster really high and they could get him back using the RTM card for a better price. Ishan Kishan is an aggressive opening batter and a wicketkeeper, increasing his value as an Indian player. The left-handed southpaw will be no short of the suitors in the auctions but the five-time champions are likely to keep their pocket dynamite.
