IPL 2023: Viacom 18 Sports hit the nail on the head when they decided to air the FIFA World Cup in Qatar for free on Jio Cinema. Reports say that as many as 11 million viewers tuned in to watch the final, in which a certain magician from Argentina led his team to ultimate glory in a pulsating and riveting match. This was the first time digital viewership exceeded TV viewership. In an exciting news for the cricket fans in India, Jio is planning to repeat the same old trick and will be streaming IPL 2023 for free.
IPL 2023 for Free on Jio
Reliance entity Viacom 18 is again set to dent its competitors by airing IPL 2023 for free. The company is aiming to gather around 500 million subscribers during the much adored tournament and become a leader in live sports streaming. Viacom had bought the IPL media rights last year for a whopping INR 23,758 crore. It amounts to an unreal INR 50 crore per match.
According to a Business Standard Report, Viacom is planning
“to broadcast IPL in regional languages, bundling free IPL viewing with Jio telecom subscription packages or allowing users with rival mobile plans to access some form of free broadcast on JioCinema”
IPL 2023 Where to Watch
The same ten teams as last year will compete in IPL 2023. Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans are the defending champions. IPL auction was held recently on 23 December 2022 in Kochi. Premium all-rounders Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, and Cameron Green received a massive paycheque. The 75-day tournament is set to begin in late March. Only time will tell who will be crowned champions this time.
The IPL following is truly massive. One can watch all the matches on Jio TV and Jio Cinema for free. With more and more viewers going digital and replacing their tv set-top boxes, it is safe to say that Viacom’s strategy will be a resounding success.
