Why IPL 2021 was suspended
The tournament was suspended indefinitely by BCCI on May 4 as several Covid cases appeared across franchises. Varun Chakravarthy, Sandeep Warrier, Amit Mishra, and Wriddhiman Saha were the players that tested positive. Chennai Super Kings bowling coach L Balaji also had contracted Covid. The governing body for cricket in India was unanimous in its decision to suspend the league and had released the following statement:
“The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind,” the statement said.
There was panic amongst the foreign players and commentators as the stringent bio bubble was breached. Fans lauded the swift decision taken by the BCCI.
