When is IPL 2021 Auction? The BCCI has started planning for the next edition of the Indian Premier League which is expected to be held in 2021. It is still not clear in which month the event will take place. However, according to a report by an Indian newspaper, the BCCI has finalized the date for the auction to be held before the tournament. The report stats that the IPL auction will be held on February 16.
A mini-auction this year and not a mega auction
As per the original schedule, the BCCI was expected to conduct a mega auction in 2021. As per the IPL rules, every three years a mega auction is conducted and teams have to buy players once again except for the specific retained players.
However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the IPL was held late in 2020. The tournament took place in UAE between September and November 2020. This meant there is a very little time frame between two seasons. Hence it was predicted that BCCI might scrap the auction this season and would conduct it next year.
The latest report in the Indian newspaper states that BCCI will conduct an auction on February 16 and it will be a mini-auction. The report claims that BCCI has already sent emails to state associations explaining the details about player registrations and other information about the mini-auction.
BCCI CEO Hemang Amin explained that, at this stage of the process, BCCI will only deal directly with the state associations and at no time will have any communication with player agents or managers. He made it clear that any failure by a player to abide by this will result in the player’s name being withdrawn with immediate effect from the IPL 2021 Auction Register and/or IPL 2021 Auction List (as appropriate).
U19 players must have first-class or List A experience
The interim BCCI CCO also made it clear that an Indian U19 player may only register for the IPL 2021 Player Auction if he is registered as a player with a State Association and has played in at least one match in either First Class cricket or List A cricket. He stated that for the 2021 Season, a U19 player is one who was born on or after 1 April 2002.
