There’s some good news for the IPL fans all around the globe. BCCI officials have confirmed that the tournament will not be canceled but will be postponed indefinitely.
With many states expressing their desire for the extension of the ongoing lockdown, the BCCI has been forced to postpone the tournament further with no official dates.
COVID-19 breakdown has taken a lot from IPL 2020
More than 8000 confirmed positive cases of Coronavirus has stunned the whole country. The numbers are increasing rapidly on a daily basis and there are no confirmed measures as of now to fight this pandemic.
Many states are in favor of the extension of lockdown which has forced BCCI to take a step back on the commencement of IPL.
“Three states Punjab, Maharashtra and Karnataka have already said that they are extending lockdown. It is implied that IPL can’t happen for the time being. But it will certainly not be cancelled. It will be postponed indefinitely,”
‘We can’t cancel IPL 2020 as it means losses to the tune of Rs 3000 crore’ – BCCI official
The statement released by the BCCI official states;
“We can’t cancel IPL as it means losses to the tune of Rs 3000 crore. The BCCI will work with all stakeholders to find a solution but for that normalcy needs to return. It’s not possible for BCCI bigwigs to commit that IPL can happen at which particular slot,”
The BCCI is eyeing a slot in July or early September prior to the T20 World Cup 2020 which is slated for a start on 18th October. However, if ICC postpones or cancels the T20 World Cup, the IPL could take place in that slot as well.
“There are lot of ifs and buts at the moment. You can only have a meaningful discussion when things normalise. Till then, nothing can be said.”
As of now, there is no official announcement regarding the new dates of the tournament.
