The India vs England Test series continues to produce more drama as on the first day of the third Test, the third umpire ruled Indian batsman Shubman Gill not-out due to ‘inconclusive evidence’ of Ben Stokes taking a clean catch, The England players were extremely unhappy with the decision as the on-field umpire had given the soft signal as out and they expressed their frustration by arguing with their onfield umpires.
Stokes claims the catch, umpire says not-out
The incident happened during the second over of India’s innings in the third IND vs ENG Test. England seamer Stuart Broad found the outside edge of Indian opener Shubman Gill. Ben Stokes, standing in the slips, tried to take a low catch towards his right.
However, the ball slipped from his hands and the England all-rounder tried to grab it once again. He claimed he had taken the catch on the second attempt. The on-field umpire sent it to the third-umpire as the ball was too close to the ground. However, he gave the soft signal out.

In the replays, it seemed as if the ball was touching the ground. However, it was not clear whether Stokes’ index finger was under the ball or not. The third umpire saw only a couple of replays and made his decision as the ball had touched the ground. Interestingly, he didn’t bother to check any other angles.
