In an important news update, Australia’s premier wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey was not available for selection in the opening ODI encounter against India scheduled to be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Even though, Australia ended up losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India recently, they are quite a formidable unit in the 50-overs format of the game. The Aussies also registered an amazing 3-0 whitewash against England during their last ODI series.

During the toss, Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith mentioned that their wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey is unfortunately sick and thus, he was unavailable for this first ODI encounter in India. Carey has done a fantastic job for the Aussie side as a wicket-keeper batsman in the ODI format over the years. After having played as many as 62 ODI matches, the left-hander has scored a total of 1629 runs at an average of 35.71 that includes 7 half-centuries and 1 hundred. In his absence, Jos Inglis will have an opportunity to showcase his talent and skills at this level. Inglis has played just a couple of ODI games so far having scored 15 runs.
“Good toss to lose. Happy batting first because I didn’t know what to do. We got to try our best to adjust to these conditions, and get our combinations right with the WC in mind. I think we played well in the back end (on BGT series), and plenty of fresh faces to choose from. Alex Carey is sick so he has gone home, so Josh Inglis will come in today. David Warner is not yet fully fit, so Mitch Marsh will open the batting. The rest of the changes will come on the big television here soon enough,” said Australia captain Steve Smith during the toss.
