India retro jersey: Indian Cricket Team is one of the most popular teams in Cricket across the world. Cricket is the most popular sport in India and everything related to the game excites the fans. Be it players or even their jerseys, fans hold great admiration for the sport. During the early days of ODI cricket when there was a dearth of sponsors, India used to sport different jerseys. Team India have in fact donned several jerseys over the years. 

Retro Jerseys India  

Ahead of India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, India sported the retro jersey which grabbed everyone’s attention. It soon became a talking point as the retro look brought back the memories of the 1992 World Cup. In this article, we look at all memorable Indian Cricket Team jerseys which the players have donned over the years: 

1985- Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket: India’s first coloured cricket jersey: 

In the year 1985 at the Benson and Hedges Championship of Cricket, team India sported coloured jerseys for the first time. Interestingly, they won the championship after beating their arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals. At that time, the kit didn’t have any sponsors, logos and players’ names. 

1991-92 Benson and Hedges World Series: Players’ name written on the jersey 

For the first time, Indian jerseys had sponsors’ name written on it during the 1991-92 Benson and Hedges World Series. Besides, all the players’ names were written. It was a limited over’s tri-series, comprising of India, Australia and West Indies. India was written at the centre of the chest, while the names were written at the back. 1992 Benson and Hedges World Cup: 

1992 World Cup saw all the teams’ wearing coloured jerseys for the first time in a quadrennial tournament. India donned navy blue coloured jersey, which had a multi-coloured strips pattern across the shoulder region. 

India’s yellow jersey in 1994: 

During India’s tour of New Zealand in 1994, team India sported a new jersey colour in Yellow. The Indian Cricket Team adopted a yellow-navy blue jersey for the series. The series also marked Sachin Tendulkar’s first game as an opener in limited over’s cricket. 

India’s tri-colour jersey in 1995 

 The 1995 quadrangular tournament, featuring India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand saw India donning a jersey that featured a tri-colour for the first time in their cricketing history. The members of the Indian cricket team wore a giant Ashok Chakra on their sleeves.

2007 World Cup: A lighter shade of blue

India suffered an early exit in the ICC 2007 World Cup, however, their jersey grabbed attention. It had a lighter shade of blue with a tri-colour strapped on the right side. India was positioned at the centre of the shirt. 

2011 World Cup:

The 2011 World Cup saw India lifting the ICC World Cup title after 28 years. They beat Sri Lanka in the finals to claim their second World Cup title. Their jersey sported a blue shade which continued for a decade. India was written at the centre, while saffron colour was used for numbers and players’ names. 

2015 World Cup 

Team India performed well in the 2015 World Cup but faltered in the semi-final game against Australia. They wore a similar jersey to that of the 2011 World Cup. It had, however, a little darker blue shade. India was written right at the centre with the saffron font. 

2020 Border-Gavaskar Series: The return of retro

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series, India sported a retro jersey that brought back the memories of the 1992 World Cup. The retro kit resembled the 1992 World Cup shirt. India continued wearing the retro jersey in their next white-ball assignment against England in 2021.
